PHOENIX (AZFamily) -- A Valley business is hosting an event to help local first responders manage stress in a physical way. Breakthrough Smash Room is hosting "Smash the Stigma" on March 23-24 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for people in trauma-exposed jobs to relieve stress. The business partnered with Stop Our Stigma, an organization focused on breaking down barriers that prevent first responders from seeking help. The event is at no cost to those who serve. First responders can book online using code HERO26. "Stop Our Stigma is about breaking down those stigmas of reaching out for help," said Dale Crogan, president of Stop Our Stigma. "We know that stress relief is a big part of the job. We know that we see and do so many things out there in the field every day that not everybody else gets to see or should see." Mesa Fire and Medical Department crews participated in the event, smashing items including monitors, keyboards, printers and bottles in private rooms. Crogan said Stop Our Stigma and Mesa Fire and Medical work to create opportunities for first responders to open up about stress. Vincent Serpico, the owner of Breakthrough Smash Room, said the business opened three and a half years ago to support mental health. The business offers custom crates for guests to smash, with the office space package being the most popular option. "Many of our guests post on our Google reviews, cheaper than therapy and twice as effective," Vincent said. The business also hosts corporate events, birthday parties and bachelor and bachelorette parties. Vincent said a near tragedy in his family was the reason for opening the business.
