Hormuz Deadline Extension Fails To Halt Democratic Surge In New Polling - Tampa Free Press

President Donald Trump has granted Iran a five-day extension to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, citing "productive conversations" even as domestic support for his administration's handling of core issues shows signs of strain. The decision comes amid a weekend of record-low voter sentiment regarding national security and foreign affairs news.
According to the latest Morning Consult Political Intelligence tracking data released March 22, 2026, the electorate has shifted its confidence toward the opposition, with Democrats now holding a 3-point lead in the economy and a 6-point advantage in energy.
The shift is particularly visible in the midterm outlook, where Democrats have widened their lead for control of Congress. A significant driver of this change is a 6-point net swing among male registered voters toward the Democratic party since late 2025.
While Republicans held an 11-point lead with men at the start of the cycle, that margin has narrowed to 5 points.

Currently, the President's overall approval rating sits at 43%, with 54% of registered voters disapproving. Among Independents, the net approval rating has fallen to -32, with only 30% approving of the administration's performance.
Economic pressure appears to be a primary catalyst for the changing political landscape. Voters earning under $50,000 annually have swung 7 points toward Democrats, moving from an even split to a 7-point Democratic advantage.
Similarly, non-college-educated voters, who previously favored Republicans by 9 points, are now essentially divided. Analysts point to fuel cost spikes, food inflation, and tariff-driven price pressures as the main burdens on these demographics.
As the midterm elections approach, the generic congressional ballot shows 45% of voters favoring Democrats compared to 42% for Republicans. While Republicans maintain a lead in trust regarding immigration (+4) and national security (+4), Democrats have secured double-digit leads in healthcare (+14) and Medicare and Social Security (+16).
The Cook Political Report has responded to these trends by shifting 18 House races toward the Democratic column, noting that Republicans would likely need to win 75% of remaining toss-up seats to maintain their current five-seat majority.
