DCD Magazine out now: Quantum of Promise

Quantum computing is a technology forever a few years away, always on the cusp of its prime time. But it is finally starting to feel a little closer, as more systems start shipping to research labs and governments. While quantum computers aren't quite ready for the world, it's time for the world to get ready for them. In issue #60 of DCD Magazine, out now, we take a look at the state of quantum chip design and manufacturing. The industry is at a crossroads, with some pushing for a completely different approach to chip designs, built from the ground up for the superconducting world. Others call this unnecessary, costly, and difficult to run. Instead, they argue, why not build upon the billions of dollars spent developing traditional CMOS hardware and find a way to make this silicon enter the quantum realm? For our cover feature, we ask some of the big players in the space what the future holds. Also inside Issue 60, we speak to Mark Gordon, Governor of Wyoming, on the Cowboy State's plans to court the hyperscalers. Wyoming is not a major data center market at present, but it has plentiful space and energy, which could make it appealing to data center operators. Another state with an eye on building out its digital infrastructure is Pennsylvania, subject of much interest from the sector over recent months. We profile some of the companies reinvigorating PA, one of the states in America's so-called Rust Belt, through data center investments. Meanwhile, Finland has become the latest Nordic nation to embrace data center operators, and could rival Norway as the region's biggest market if several big plans come to fruition. Plus, how AWS connects its data centers, 5G going underground on London's Tube, tornado-proof data centers, sustainable cement, and a Cooling Supplement.
