Arrest made after road rage incident on US 70 in Johnston County

Authorities arrested Mitchell Williams III after the incident on Tuesday, March 17. Williams is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Johnston County deputies arrested a man for his alleged role in last week's road rage incident along U.S. Highway 70 near Princeton. Mitchell Williams III is accused of shooting another man "about the face" with a semi-automatic pistol handgun on Tuesday near U.S. 70 and Shoreline Drive, according to an arrest warrant. Williams, 36, faces a misdemeanor charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Public documents show Johnston County deputies arrested Williams on Tuesday, March 17. The documents show he posted $2,000 bond on the same day. The sheriff's office said charges are possible against the other man, but none are planned as of Monday, March 23. Authorities took him to the hospital. The sheriff's office said he is talking and stable. WRAL News asked the Johnston County Sheriff's Office who it believes was the aggressor between Williams and the other man. The sheriff's office said both men were "in the wrong." The sheriff's office is still investigating and working to get video footage of the incident. Radio traffic indicates the shooting happened around 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 17. "Responding to 70 East for a fight. One subject's been shot," someone said on the radio traffic. "One is a work truck with a trailer behind it. The other is a Chevy Impala." According to the Pew Research Center, road rage incidents involving guns are more common and deadlier since the pandemic.
