The Alberni Valley Rescue Squad helped a hiker who was separated from their group at night on March 21. The group had been hiking the 5040 Peak trail.
During a hike, the group was able to maintain some communication with their separated companion through satellite messaging, after they realized they weren't able to reunite, they called search and rescue. Search crews encountered snow and steep terrain during their operation, an AVRS member posted on social media.
Members from the hoist team attempted to respond but weather conditions forced them to turn around. The ground crew arrived at the 5040 trail and searched the area using pinged cellphone locations. The terrain was challenging but the team was able to find the hiker through co-ordinated sound calls, requesting the hiker's co-ordinates through satellite texting and persistent searching. The crew located the hiker near a ridge line.
The hiker was in good spirits but showing signs of mild hypothermia. The challenging weather saw the rescue squad opt to shelter in place, building an emergency shelter and fire to warm the hiker before helping them down the trail. The rescue squad noted that fires are not permitted on 5040 and was only built due to an emergency.
The rescue squad was glad to see a positive outcome but is reminding hikers of safety tips:
- Stay together, don't separate from your group
- Know your limits, the 5040 trail is very challenging and difficult weather and night can increase risks significantly
- Create a trip plan and share it amongst the hiking group and someone back home. Group members should discuss turning back if the need arises
- Be prepared with all members carrying essentials and extra layers. Things like fire-starting tools, food and a light source are key pieces of gear along with a communication device. The rescue squad said an InReach is an accurate tool for pinpointing your location.
